What’s your favorite planet?

One of the basic rules of the universe is that nothing is perfect. Perfection simply doesn’t exist…..Without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist.

Stephen Hawking

I am sure you guys have heard this question in the recent past, so well let me tell you all about my favorite planet 🙂 we all have learnt this while we were in school that there are 9 planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto. Well thats no longer true, Pluto which was the 9th planet in our solar system is not considered as our planet anymore. Over the last few decades, powerful new ground and space based observatories have completely changed our previous understanding of outer space.

Pluto and its moons are now known to be just a large example of a collection of objects called the “Kuiper Belt”-This is a region of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune, believed to contain many objects such as comets, asteroids and other small bodies made largely of ice. Astronomers have estimated that there are at least 70,000 such objects that are made of ice in the Kuiper Belt with the same composition of Pluto, and according to the new rules regarding the properties a planet should consist, Pluto is not a planet its just another object in the Kuiper Belt. According to the IAU (International Astronomical Union) there is just one requirement that pluto does not qualify which is its “not cleared the neighborhood” of its orbit.

Well, what does this mean? As planets form, they become the dominant gravitational body in their orbit in the solar system. As they interact with other smaller objects, they either consume or sling them away with their gravity. Earth in comparison has 1.7 million times the mass of the other objects in its orbit, and Pluto does not qualify in this criteria and therefore is considered a dwarf planet.

Well, no doubt that Earth is my favorite Planet:) because it’s the only known planet that sustains life and has a great balance of physical properties, distance from the sun and the geological history. Earth has the perfect balance and combination of all the properties that requires a planet to sustain life.

Jupiter is my second best planet not only because it’s a beautiful looking planet but also because it protects us from dangerous meteors and other cosmic debris. Quite the protector 🙂 Jupiter’s moon Europa is one of the most interesting moons in the solar system because it’s said that it may support life(Micro-Organisms) and it also confirmed that it has around 67 moons wow !!! That’s just amazing 🙂

“The Great Red Spot” is a huge storm on Jupiter and it has raged for at least 350 years!! It is so large that 3 Earths can fit inside it. Jupiter also has the shortest day compared to all the other 7 planets. It so huge that it take 317 Earths to equal the mass of Jupiter. The biggest Planet in the solar system is one of my favorite planet.

Let me know which is your favorite planet and why ? 🙂
